Vinyl plank flooring vs. sheet vinyl

Vinyl plank flooring vs. sheet vinyl

When vinyl flooring was introduced to the US market decades ago, it was highly praised for durability, easy care, and high water resistance. Over the years, the style has evolved to include designs with images of wood, stone, tile, colorful geometrics, and more.

You might wonder how luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is different. Please read further to learn of the enhancements or additions.

Design option enhancement!

While sheet vinyl has those same images of wood, stone, and tile, it comes in, well, sheets. Luxury vinyl flooring is cut into long planks to mimic hardwood floorboards (luxury vinyl plank or LVP flooring).

Alternatively, it's also cut into square, tile-sized pieces (luxury vinyl tile or LVT flooring), used mainly to echo stone and ceramic tile. We're told all the extra seams add to the realism–but you won't pay nearly the same price as you would for genuine materials.

Completely waterproof

Vinyl plank flooring and LVT are made of waterproof materials, such as the vinyl composite core. As a result, the floor can be submerged or spilled on without damage.

Unlike water-resistant products, there's no immediate need to wipe a spill. As a result, it doesn't absorb so that the core won't be soaked, stained, or rippled.

Ultra durability

Luxury vinyl flooring is five times thicker than the original product. It's also layered with a thick, transparent wear layer over the printed design sheet.

The wear layer protects the floor from scratches, scuffs, and dents. It also helps waterproofing by keeping spills from absorbing in the LVP flooring.

On top of that is a clear urethane coating. It adds extra strength and shine.

Easy care, simple installation

Like sheet vinyl, all these needs is regular sweeping and periodic mopping. The installation's a snap (literally) when installed via the floating floor technique; the pieces click, mat, and hover over a clean, dry, and level subfloor without adhesives.

The pieces can also be glued-down.
